Obituary

Moore, Marie Burks - Spring Hill, FL Marie Burks Moore formally of Houston, MS, 82, passed away Monday, January 4, 2016, at North MS Medical Center Hospice Unit in Tupelo. She was born February 19, 1933 in Hamilton, MS to David Harrison Burks and Ludie Belle Arnold Burks. She graduated from Houston High School (Houston, MS). After graduation she married Glenn D. Moore. Glenn joined the Air Force and they moved to Chandler Arizona where they both attended and graduated from Arizona State University. Then they moved to Memphis, TN, where Marie started Maries Kindergartens, later adding Maries Day School with grades 1-6, and then established Glenmore Academy with grades K-12. The school was accredited by the Tennessee Board of Education. When the school was sold in the seventies it had over 1100 students. In 1973, she was selected as the Mother of the Year for the state of Tennessee and represented her state in the national competition in Denver, CO. In 1974, she received the national William Jaffe Award in New York City for outstanding work with young mothers. In 1975, she appeared in Personalities of The South. She was a member of Eastern Star, was a duchess of Shelbi in the Memphis Cotton Carnival, and helped organize the first East Memphis Business and Professional Women s Club. She was an organist for Southland Baptist Church in Memphis, TN, Mt Vernon Baptist Church Fulton, MS, was a member of First Baptist Church Houston, MS, and at the time of her death, a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, Spring Hill, FL. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and working with young people.
A private funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Terry Ray Rhodes officiating. Burial will follow at Houston Cemetery in Houston.
Houston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Dr. Kathryn (Michael) McCullough of Tupelo, MS and Glenna Moore Felts of Springhill, FL; sister, Nancy Mattox of Tupelo, MS; grandchildren, Anne Marie (Leisa) Felts of Ringgold, Ga, Nolly (Erin) Felts of Brooksville, Fl, Amanda K. (Chad) Winsor of Niamey, Niger, West Africa, Elizabeth T. (John Mark) Whitney of Clinton, MS, Ms. J. Glenn McCullough, Paden (Betsy) McCullough of Tupelo, MS, Michael Burks (Logan) McCullough of Memphis, TN and; great-grandchildren, Christopher and Lauren Felts, Morgan and Shelby Winsor, Riley Houge, Wright, Jackson and McCallum Whitney; and nieces and nephews, Jane (Carr) Sams, Pam (Gerald) Harmon, Terry (Rosemary) Rhodes, Lace (Rick) Hancock, David Mattox, and Terry (Marquel) Wheeler.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn Moore; daughter, Cynthia Moore Tippett; and sister, Ruth (Boozie) Rhodes.
