Obituary

Leland Brown Norman, Jr.

Leland Brown Norman, Jr., of Houston, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. He was 77 years old.

Born on August 7, 1948, in Houston, Mississippi, Leland was the beloved son of Leland Brown Norman, Sr. and Virginia Louise Bullard Norman. A lifelong resident of the community he cherished, Leland devoted his life to serving others with compassion, integrity, and unwavering dedication.

For decades, Leland was the proud Owner and Funeral Director of Houston Funeral Home in Houston, Mississippi, where he guided countless families through life's most difficult moments with kindness, grace, and professionalism. Funeral service was never simply his profession—it was his calling. He believed every family deserved dignity, every life deserved to be honored, and every goodbye deserved to be meaningful.

His commitment to the funeral profession extended far beyond his hometown. Leland served as Chairman of the Mississippi State Board of Funeral Service and was recognized by his peers as Mississippi Funeral Director of the Year in both 1980 and 1981. These honors reflected not only his professional excellence but also the immense respect and admiration he earned throughout the State of Mississippi.

Leland's heart for service began early in life. As a member of the Boy Scouts of America, one of his proudest accomplishments was earning the rank of Eagle Scout, a distinction that reflected the character, leadership, and values he carried throughout his life. He also faithfully served his state as a veteran of the Mississippi National Guard.

A proud 1970 graduate of Mississippi State University, Leland was an active member of Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity, the Loyalty Club, and the Bulldog Club. His love for Mississippi State never faded, and cheering on the Bulldogs remained one of his favorite traditions throughout his life.

His devotion to Houston reached far beyond his business. Leland believed deeply in investing in his hometown and helping it grow for future generations. He was a founding board member of Leadership Chickasaw, the Exchange Club, and the Chickasaw Development Foundation, serving as Director of the Chickasaw Development Foundation from 1983 until 1988. Whether supporting community events, sponsoring school fundraisers, or quietly lending a helping hand wherever it was needed, Leland's generosity left an enduring mark on the community he loved.

His faith was the foundation of his life. As an active member of Houston First Methodist Church, Leland faithfully served in the Seekers Sunday School Class, as a longtime usher, and on the church Security Committee. To many, Sunday mornings simply weren't complete without seeing Leland standing at the front doors, greeting everyone with his warm smile, a friendly handshake, and, more often than not, a piece of candy tucked away in his pocket.

While his accomplishments were many, those who knew Leland will remember him most for his gentle spirit, generous heart, quick wit, and genuine love for people. He had an extraordinary gift for making everyone feel welcome. Whether you were family, a lifelong friend, or someone he had just met, Leland had a way of making you feel like you belonged.

He treasured time spent at the lake, where countless young people affectionately knew him as "Uncle Leland." His "Lake Kids" became an extension of his family, and he delighted in watching them grow, laugh, and make memories that will forever include him.

He leaves behind the love of his life and fiancée, Jeannie Holliday Parks of Houston; his sisters, Martha Carol Markland (Gary) of Rogers, Arkansas, and Mimi Dye (Wilburn) of Cullman, Alabama; his nieces, Beth Rudasill (Brian) and their children, Caroline and Grant, and Carole Dalton (David) and their children, Elizabeth and Will; his nephews, Clayton Dye (Evelyn) and their son, Jacob, and Mason Dye (Hailey) and their sons, Lane and Silas.

Leland also leaves behind "his special girls and caregivers", Hope Parks and Heather Boyer, whose compassion, devotion, and love brought him great comfort and who became treasured members of his family. He also leaves behind three very honored employees, Amanda Heair, Jerald Harmon and Tim Finn, whose loyalty and dedication meant so much to him.

For more than five decades, Leland helped others honor the lives of those they loved. Now, it is our turn to honor the remarkable life of the man who cared for us all.

Though his earthly journey has ended, Leland's legacy lives on in every family he comforted, every life he touched, every act of kindness he offered, and every person fortunate enough to have known him. Houston has lost one of its greatest servants, but his example of compassion, humility, and selfless service will continue to inspire generations to come.

The family finds comfort in knowing that the man who spent a lifetime helping others say goodbye has now been welcomed home with the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at Houston First Methodist Church with Bro. David Upshaw and Dr. Randy Rinehart officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Interment will follow at Houston City Cemetery.

Frank Pemper, Wallace Norman, JR., Jonathan Blankenship, Eddie Neal, Tom Byrne, and Larry Williams are honored to serve as his pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, Leland would like for donations to be made to Houston First Methodist Church.
