IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jeanette
Doss
June 18, 1929 – September 2, 2022
Jeanette Harrington Doss was born June 18, 1929 in Chickasaw County just before the Great Depression began, and she went to her heavenly home September 2, 2022. She was one of 10 children, including a twin brother. By the time of their birth, the twins were numbers 8 and 9, and their parents were "out of names." A visiting neighbor suggested the names Jean and Jeanette. Jean got a middle name, but Jeanette never did. At a young age she decided her name would be Gerry Jeanette. She was a tiny little thing, especially next to her larger-than-life twin, but what she lacked in stature was more than made up for in intellect and heart.
She married Joe Lee Doss at age 18 and began her adventure in motherhood at age 20. As a military wife, she traveled with Joe Lee the first few years of their marriage. Then, the young couple settled themselves into a home and routine in Houston, Mississippi, where they would spend the rest of their lives together. While Joe Lee was busy working hard to support his family, she was busy shaping, molding, and rearing that family. She embraced that role with every fiber of her being and exemplified the godly woman heralded in Proverbs 31. Her every action was out of love for her family, which she wove together into a beautiful tapestry as her family grew.
Jeanette was a delicate balance of stubbornness, wisdom, and grace. She taught us that you can't just decide to be content because it doesn't work that way. You must decide to be thankful , and that will lead you to true contentment. To the outside world, her life must have seemed rather small. She never traveled much, except the occasional visit to see siblings or children and grandchildren. She never acquired college degrees or earned stamps in a passport. But from her little house, in that kitchen full of love and homecooked meals, she shaped our world, and through us, her legacy lives on. Her love and tenderness have honed and refined us all in ways we couldn't even fathom at the time. So gentle was her guidance that she could set you straight, and you would never even feel a sting. Her snippets of humble wisdom are guideposts that will follow us all our days. As with the woman of Proverbs 31, Jeanette's price is far above rubies.
As her granddaughter Amanda wrote a few years ago:
"She is one of those rare one-in-a-million people who is truly pure to her core and who wants nothing from anyone. She has never been materialistic—money and possessions do not impress her—it's the simple things in life that bring her joy. Spending time with her family, singing, working in the yard, swinging on the front porch swing . . . it doesn't matter what it is you are doing with her, she is excited to see you come and sad to see you go. She takes what time you can give her and she's happy with that. Her love is unconditional—she gives it freely, never wanting anything in return. She's untarnished by this world that can be so mean and self-centered, never letting gossip leave her lips and only speaking of another if she has something kind to say. She loves to say, 'You learn more from listening than talking.' So she is content to sit politely and listen while others share stories of their accomplishments or experiences. She is truly precious—she's the perfect combination of humbleness and strength—and she is strong . . . so strong. She hasn't always had it easy in this life, but you will never hear her complain. She doesn't know the meaning of self-pity."
Jeanette is survived by her four children: Sandra Doss Bullock (Edgar), Betty Lynn Doss Campbell (Edwon), Joe Douglas Doss, and Scott Harrington Doss (Cheryl).
She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Emily Nicole Beyer (Christopher), Jennifer Lynn Bullock, Edwon Bradley Campbell (Kimberly), Richard Cory Campbell (Jacqueline), Kevin Jordan Campbell (Allanda), Jonathan Doss Campbell (Yan), Stephen Andrew Campbell (Abby), Alyssa Layne Wright, and Kristy Doss Hardin (Brandon).
