Wyckoff, Jean
- Houston Jean Wyckoff, 84, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at Fernbrooke Personal Care Home in Houston. She was born February 15, 1931 in Beaver Falls, PA to Gilbert Findlay and Thelma McClintock Findlay. She was a RN with a career in nursing that spanned 45 years. She was the first nurse hired at Miami Baptist Memorial Hospital. Then she was at The Trace Hospital in Houston, MS with Miss Criddle but as the night nurse. She also taught the first EMT class sponsored by Dr. Edward Gore as well as other classes at ICC and later at Brevard Community College in Palm Bay, FL. She was a volunteer at the Palm Bay Police Department (FL) in the Special Victims Unit, handling many battered women cases for 7 years. The last 7 years in Florida, Jean volunteered with Brevard County Holmes Hospital Hospice in Melbourne, FL and was instrumental in developing a hospice unit in Cape Canaveral, FL. It was Ormond Memorial Hospital that she was presented with a certificate from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals that recognized her for being the first nurse and hospital in Florida to achieve that rating. During the 80 s she and her husband, Stan, were assigned by the DOD to Bavaria, Germany, where she often spoke on health issues and nursing topics mainly in Germany. She was part of a team at the International Epidemiology Conference to assist in the tours given to all the medical professionals around Austria, Switzerland and Germany in 1983. All in all, they visited 26 countries and skied in Austria, Tyrol, Italy, Switzerland, France and Germany during their 6 year tour in Bavaria. After retiring, Jean and Stan traveled intermittently to all 4 corners of the USA for 10 years camping in their motorhome and visiting police departments as Ambassadors of Good Will (for the PBPD) researching how police departments manage volunteers in the departments and associated critical issues. They were both active in the Civil Air Patrol. They moved to Houston permanently in 2005. She was a resident of Fernbrooke Personal Care home since 2007. She was a member of Van Vleet Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 3:00 PM at Houston Funeral Home with Rev. Bobby Wilbanks officiating. Burial will follow at Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Houston.

Survivors include: her husband, Stanley H. Wyckoff of Houston; Daughter, Karen (Eddie) Hill of Houston; Son, Craig (Cheryl) King of Iron Station, NC; step-sons, Larry (Sue) Wyckoff of Jeffersonville, VT, Tom Wyckoff of Jeffersonville, VT, Bill (Ann Marie) Wyckoff of Thousand Oaks, CA, John (Penelope) Wyckoff of Grand Isle, VT; sister, Susan (John) Singleton of Key Largo, FL; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister Jan Karns.
Pallbearers are: Eddie Hill, Chad Ray, Keith Parham, Vince Clause, and Edward Clark.
Visitation will be Saturday, June 27, 2015 from 2:00-3:00 PM service time at Houston Funeral Home.
