Mr. McCullough was born on February 18, 1931 in Pyland, MS to James Iverson McCullough and Louise Wilson McCullough. He was a member of Houston First United Methodist Church and an Air Force Veteran. After graduating from Houston High School, Class of 1949, Hugh attended Wood College at Mathiston, MS and Itawamba Junior College at Fulton, MS. He was married to Ella Hughes Johnson. Hugh served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, spending one year in Korea in Radar Maintenance, attaining the rank of Staff Sargent. After his discharge from the Air Force, Hugh returned to college to earn a BS degree from Mississippi State University in Industrial Management. Employment with the U.S. Steel took him to Birmingham, Al., until 1964, when he returned to Houston to join the family business, Chickasaw Handle Company, until his retirement in 1994. Hugh was an athlete in high school, participating in all sports offered, with offers to continue football on scholarship at junior college level. Having been interested in flying since his teenage years, he earned his pilot's license in single and twin-engine planes. One of the joys of his life was to pilot his own plane, which he was able to do until health prevented him from doing so. He enjoyed traveling and was a member of the Good Sam Camping organization and Family Motor Coach Association.
