Stallings, Christine
- On Wednesday, September 23, 2015, Christine Douglass Stallings died in Summerville, Georgia, at Oakview Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She was 97 years old. A longtime resident of Mississippi, Mrs. Stallings moved to Georgia three years ago to be near her daughter.
More than sixty years ago Mrs. Stallings with her husband, Floyd Stallings, now deceased, moved to Houston to open The Stallings Company. Holding degrees in both mathematics and science, she was recruited shortly after arriving in the community to join the staff at Houston High School. For the next thirty years she taught chemistry, physics, and biology. On several occasions during her tenure she was named Star Teacher; throughout the system she was widely loved and respected by students and faculty. She graduated from Delta State University and completed additional study at Mississippi State University and Blue Mountain College.
For many years she was an active member of First Baptist Church, Houston, where she was a leader in the Women s Missionary Union. Additionally, she was a member of and held leadership positions in the Culture Club of Houston. Following the death of her husband in 1994, Mrs. Stallings moved to Traceway Manor in Tupelo, where she enjoyed many active years. At the time of her death she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Tupelo.
Two children survive her: Wanda Lowry and her husband, Charlie of Summerville, GA, and the Reverend Buddy Stallings of New York, NY. Additionally she has three grandchildren Ross Lowry and Jolyn King, both of Summerville, GA, and Brian Stallings of Jackson, MS, and five great grandchildren. She was the oldest of five siblings, two of whom survive her: Ada Berch and Juanita Smith.
Visitation will be held at Houston Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon, September 27 from 1-2. A graveside service will follow at Houston Cemetery.
