Woodland resident Charlotte M c Cullough M c Quary will be inducted into Holmes Community College Hall of Fame during the awards banquet help Sept. 29 as part of homecoming celebrations. When Mrs. M c Quary graduated from Holmes in 1946, the world was a very different place from what it had been when she entered as a freshman in the fall of 1944. Describing the difference in the campus between her freshman and sophomore years, M c Quary said, "World War II had just ended. The Veterans swarmed the campus, causing great excitement among the girls. The campus was never the same."
While at Holmes, she met her husband, Doyle M c Quary, who had been serving in the South Pacific with the Marines while she was a freshman at Holmes. Together, they shared 49 ½ years, two daughters, six grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
However, one thing stayed constant for the Houlka native; her talent for basketball and her love for the sport. Selected an All-Star forward both her freshman and sophomore years, she was voted Most Athletic Girl by the student body in 1946.
She was also a member of the Women's Athletic Association. She and her teammates brought home the Junior College Basketball Championship trophy in 1945 and were second in the state the following year. As with any team, the coaches were instrumental; in the Lady Bulldogs success. M c Quary remembers Ras Branch and Frank Branch as coaches 'who taught us with great skill, patience and dedication how to play the game."
After Holmes, M c Quary Continued her education at Memphis State College, where she received a bachelor's degree in business education. When M c Quary began her teaching career in Tippah County, she used the coaching skills she had learned from the Branches to coach the girls' basketball team at Dumas High School and the softball team at Falkner. She taught business education for both schools. After five years, she and her husband, who was also a coach, left Tippah County and moved to Chickasaw County.
M c Quary taught at Woodland High School for 15 years and Houston High School for 19 years. In addition to her teaching duties, she also served as senior class sponsor, coached senior class plays, chaperoned senior class trips, served as chairperson of homecoming activities, assisted and planned graduation programs, served as school yearbook and newspaper sponsor, band parent and band chaperone. She also served as recording secretary of the County Teachers Association, which included all the schools in both Tippah County, and Chickasaw County.
She was a charter member of the Mississippi Pi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honor society for women in education and has served as recording secretary, corresponding secretary and as chairperson of the scholarship committee. She has served three terms as president of the Delphian Club, a civic organization. She has also served as recording secretary of the group.
A member of Trace Regional Auxiliary in Houston, she has given over 2500 hours of volunteer service and has served as vice-president and chairperson of the Luncheon and scholarship committees for this organization. She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Woodland, where she has served as Sundays School and Training Union teacher, Bible School teachers and chairperson of the nominating committee for church teachers and workers. She also served as chairperson of the hostess committee.
